SIFF 2011 Movies - the Plan

I used Google Docs to whittle down the movies on my "to watch" list. This post will just summarize the choices that I have made thus far. It is subject to change. If you want to see a specific movie with me, let me know ASAP, so I don't get all crazy and decide to go to a different movie.

These are in order by day. (Note, that with my travel schedule and other things, there are gaps.)

Saturday 21-May


Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff 11:00 AM Harvard Exit
Cinematographer Jack Cardiff's nine-decade film career includes landmark work with John Huston, Alfred Hitchcock, and Michael Powell. Responsible for some of the most indelible images in film history, he also brought his camera behind-the-scenes. Filmed over 12 years, CAMERAMAN is a thrilling look at Cardiff's life in cinema.


The Trip 3:30 PM Harvard Exit

Two old friends take a trip through England’s spectacular Lake District, stopping off to eat at a series of top-notch restaurants. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are wildly funny in another bout of their acerbic exchanges first seen in TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY.


The Future 7:30 PM AMC Pacific Place 11
With droll humor and touches of magical realism, Miranda July (ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW) tells the story of a young couple who decide to take thirty days to explore their destinies. This whimsical experiment leads to some surprising revelations about the uncertainty of what the future holds. This includes a cat nararator named Paw-Paw.

Sunday 22-May

Submarine 11:00 AM Neptune Theatre
Based on the successful debut novel by Joe Dunthorne, SUBMARINE is the hilarious coming-of-age story of 15-year-old Oliver Tate. Oliver has two summer objectives: to lose his virginity to pyromaniac bully Jordana before he turns 16, and to put an end to his mother’s renewed flame for her ex-lover.

Four More Years 1:30 PM Egyptian Theatre
David has just lost the election he was slated to win. Disheartened and disappointed, he meets Martin and falls hopelessly in love—only to discover that Martin works for the party that just defeated him. Will David’s marriage, professed heterosexuality, and political zeal keep him from true love?

Beginners 4:30 PM Neptune Theatre
When Oliver meets an alluring and unpredictable actress, their budding love affair floods him with memories of his recently deceased father Hal, who came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized and wonderfully tumultuous gay life in this deeply funny and transformative drama. In the wake of a mysterious epidemic, which causes people to lose their senses following intense emotional outbursts, medical researcher Susan embarks on an affair with chef Michael, but their relationship may cause them to lose more than just their hearts


Natural Selection 7:00 PM Egyptian Theatre
Devout Christian housewife Linda finds her dying husband’s long-lost son—a mullet-haired, drug-addled, escaped convict—and embarks on a road trip back to his bedside for a final goodbye. Part road trip, part oddly matched romance, NATURAL SELECTION took the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW.


Man at Bath 9:30 PM Egyptian Theatre
When work demands keep them apart, Omar and Emmanuel do everything they can to prove to each other they are no longer in love. Despite their best efforts, the distance helps them both reflect on their relationship, in very different fashions. A lyrical, stylized poem to homosexual desire.

The Bengali Detective 7:00 PM SIFF Cinema
This wildly entertaining documentary set in Kolkata follows a pudgy, middle-aged private dick. Rajesh Ji is a man of fierce purpose, whether it involves serious sleuthing, caring for his beloved family, or coaching a dance routine for a ragtag team of his own employees for a national TV talent show.

Viva Riva! 9:30 PM AMC Pacific Place 11
After stealing a truck full of gasoline during a fuel shortage, a small time hustler named Riva intends to live it up. Unfortunately, an army commander, a priest, his best friend, and the sadistic Angolan drug lord from whom he stole the truck would all happily take their cut.

A Hitchcockian thriller with a compelling twist, this tale of forbidden desire focuses on a teacher’s stifled lust and a manipulative teenage boy who unravels both their lives with a single act. The suspense is well maintained and underpinned by a striking score, making Director Marco Berger a welcome addition to the growing ranks of notable Argentinean directing talent.

Toast 6:30 PM Neptune Theatre
Based on the childhood memoir of Nigel Slater, Britain’s celebrated chef and food writer, TOAST charts the early relationships that shaped his life and career. With Freddie Highmore as Slater and Helena Bonham Carter as his deliciously wicked stepmother in this delectable biopic.

Bon Appétit 9:30 PM Neptune Theatre
Ambitious and talented, Spanish Chef Daniel arrives at Zurich’s gourmet restaurant “W” intent on becoming restauranteur Thomas Wackerle’s protégé. However, his professional plans begin to unravel when he shares just one kiss with Hanna, Wackerle’s sommelier and mistress. A delectable feast of romantic frisson.

Life in a Day 6:00 PM Cinerama

This collection of YouTube videos was shot by thousands of amateur and pro filmmakers worldwide on a single day: July 24, 2010. The result is a visual time capsule depicting the endless kaleidoscope of human life on earth, as well as a reflection of our collective loves, hopes, and fears.
